FAQ: Switching Digital Audio To USB Analog False Assumption
Q: I made an incorrect assumption when I bought your Kanex Mini DisplayPort Adapter To HDMI 1080p Video w/ Digital Audio. I thought that it would include the functionality of the Kanex Mini DisplayPort Adapter To HDMI 1080p Video w/ USB Audio when the optical cable wasn't used. I received the unit, and it doesn't work that way. It does not offer the option to output the audio through the USB connector.
A: Yes this is true. The USB port from our sku MDPHDMITOS carries only power to the adapter. It does not carry analog audio and cannot switch from digital out to analog.

Certain applications will not output digital sound. This adaptor won't work for those applications, so you would presumably need to marry this with the MDPHDMIUSB, which would require a Displayport repeater, and then an HDMI switch to recombine the two signals. UGLY.
Can you combine the MDPHDMIUSB and the MDPHDMITOS in a new SKU? I wouldn't mind paying more for that ultimate output adaptor.

I too thought that this adaptor covered off all possible audio out possibilities. Are you going to merge the capabilities of the MDPHDMIUSB into this product at some point and release it with a new SKU?
There are certain applications that do not support digital audio output. In order to fix this at present, you would need to own both the MDPHDMITOS and the MDPHDMIUSB, and run both using a displayport repeater, then merge the signals back into a single HDMI cable using an HDMI switch. UGLY.
